Yellow Swarming Fly

Thaumatomyia notata

Yellow Swarming Fly

Description

The larvae of these flies are subterranean and are predators of root aphids. In early autumn, the adult flies seek protected places to spend the winter, such as wall cavities, roof voids and attics, usually returning to the same building year after year and often favouring south facing buildings. They can occur in enormous numbers.
